Counselling and Psychotherapy
What is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy works at greater depth. A psychotherapist has a longer and more in depth training than a counsellor. A well trained psychotherapist will generally be accredited, as I am, with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy. Psychotherapy is more likely to be longer term.
How will counselling or psychotherapy work?
There are a number of different therapeutic approaches which help to reduce emotional distress and to improve wellbeing. I am trained in the following models:
- client centred/humanistic-which allows you the client to arrive at your own solutions and make the changes that you feel are needed
- psychodynamic-which helps you understand how problems occurring in the present link with earlier experiences
- arts based therapy- which uses the arts to gain access to the unconscious and to gain new insights into your current situation
- cognitive behavioural therapy- which helps change those behaviours and ways of thinking that are unhelpful to you
Which approach will be best for me?
I will use whichever approach we think will suit you best and we will discuss this at our first meeting. All counselling/psychotherapy aims to facilitate greater self understanding. It will always work best if you can be honest with your therapist. I will always be ready to listen to how you are experiencing our work together.
How do I find out more?
I offer a free 30 minute session so that we can meet to discuss what makes you consider having counselling/psychotherapy. At this session we will also discuss fees, length of session, likely length of therapy etc. If we decide to go ahead, I will give you a written contract. I am willing to be flexible about fees where there would otherwise be genuine hardship.
